Does the XR700 module have an LED in the end?  It's been sold in two
versions; older ones without the LED have different circuitry inside for the
positive ground version.  Only the ones with the LED can be installed either
way.  5 years ago should be the one with the LED but sometimes odd things
happen.

With the LED and negative ground, you should have yellow wire to "-" on
coil.
Red wire to "+" on coil along with the white wire from the harness.
Black from module goes directly to ground.

Check the LED while cranking the engine.  If it doesn't blink, either the
connections are still wrong, or the module has failed.
