Thanks Jeff, and all who replied to my question. I now understand the difference between NPT and NPTF (F for Fuel) pipe threads. NPTF threads form a tighter interference fit than NPT threads so sealant is not intended to be required....assuming all is in good order.

NPTF means it's a tapered pipe thread. Assuming everything is
otherwise in good nick, it shouldn't need any sealant.
