I think you can leave the hub attached to the 
axle and take the bolts around the backing plate 
loose.  The hub / axle / bearings should pull out 
as a unit (watch the shims).  I believe the 
backing plate is sandwiched between the bearing 
retainer and the axle housing.  With the hub / 
axle out the backing plate will almost fall off - 
then easily removed and swapped side to side.
