Indeed, the only time I've been left on the side of the road by a bad coil,
it was a "Lucas Sports" that was less than a year old. It's predecessor was
over 50 years old when it failed, but in such a manner that I was able to
finish driving the car to VTR 2009 (where I bought the Lucas Sports from an
event vendor and installed it in the parking lot).

I agree with all that Geo said, except for the one oddity that, if you buy a
new Pertronix "Flamethrower" coil; Pertronix recommends the 1.5 ohm version
be used without a ballast for V8 applications (like the Stag) with points.
I'm not sure why that is, but it seemed to work OK for me (tho I only drove
perhaps 10,000 miles before the car was sidelined for other reasons).
