Past driving season a rattle developed from the front of the TR3. Clatter, really. It rose and fell with RPM's, inconsistent but frequent, but wasn't a knock, so I suspected a broken timing chain tensioner.

Spent quality time with the apron today, and found the issue much better than I expected. The center bolt was loose, the one that goes into the crankshaft to hold the fan extension and pulley hub. Since it also keeps the crank timing gear in place, the gear must have been moving a bit back and forth making that noise. Pulled the timing chain cover and all's well in there, so will be replacing the front oil seal (that was leaking like mad and now I know why) and buttoning up this weekend.

Queston: Rebuilt the engine some four driving seasons ago, and took this long to come loose. Does anyone ever use lock tite in there?

Any suggestions while I'm in there?

Terry
Had similar experience where a severe rattle that rose and fell but was predominate when under acceleration ended up being a water pump pulley that was coming loose. Thought it might have been back of (hood) rattling on the cowel as well, but no.
Good luck!.

Does anyone have an original copy of the TSOA newsletter from April 1962,
the first in-period mention of the TR3B? I'd like to have a good color
photo-quality scan of the cover page.

My archive has a second- or third-generation photocopy of that issue, and
the excellent archive at Temple of Triumph, VTR's Tallahassee chapter, (
http://www.templeoftriumph.org/tsoa/aTSOA0462.pdf) has a defect in the scan
of the photo caption.

TIA,
