[TR] Problems with first start of the season

List,
I had some problems getting my TR4A running this year.
My problems seem to be centered around the carburetors which are SU HS-6's. I
couldn't keep the engine running unless the choke was on, even once the engine
warmed up.
I decided to re-adjust them today and now it runs OK but the main jets are out
pretty far. It seems to be running rich but I didn't get a chance to set up
the Color Tune I have but plan on doing that next weekend.
In case I am doing something wrong tuning the carbureters here is more or less
what I did in the sequence I did it..
1. Loosened the throttle linkage and set the idle at about 1-1/2 turns on both
carburetors.
2. Started the engine and using my Unisyn, I balanced the carbs finally
getting them balanced and the engine running about 1,000 RPM.
3. I adjusted the main jets till the engine ran OK which ended up with the
main jets way out beyond the suggestes two revolutions.

The end result is that while the engine seems to be running OK and not have
the choke on, Is seems way too rich. Maybe I am just worrying too much and
need to wait until I get to try the color tune. Never used that before but
there is a first time for everything I guess.
If anyone has any ideas or suggestions on why the main jets are open so much I
would like ot hear from you.
I know one thing I will not do again is to put off putting a fuel additive in
the tank to help keep the gas from going bad!
Thanks,
Dave Connitt
