FWIW, I've used the method that Geo outlined three times now, and it has worked fine all 3 times.  First time was in 1984, shortly
after buying my 59 TR3A (which had definitely been rode hard and put away wet).  Then again on the 56 TR3 (which hadn't been ridden
quite as hard, but still put away wet).  Third time was parting out the 59.

A suitable GearWrench makes the job go easier, as it will slip down the threaded rod and give you a ratchet drive.  But I did it the
first time with only a box end wrench.

On a TR3 it takes several different pulls as the frame & body get in the way to some extent.  You have to start with a fairly short
spacer then add sections to that.
