I have seen a lot of brushes, but I've never seen one with slots.
Still, I can't imagine they need a slotted surface to help them seat.
Brushes are typically graphite or similar,a nd are thus very soft. It
won't take much to seat them.

More likely the grooves/slots help it fit in the holder - there may be
an application where the grooves are used to hold the brush vertical in
the holder. I'd see if it fits with the grooves to the side, and
install them that way. But I don't know for sure. You could try it,
and see if they seat correctly without needing a grooved surface to help.

Note: The supplied brush may be originally designed for a different
application, and so the grooves are vestigial.

As for the plastic, very resourceful. I might look around for some
slippery tough plastic like Delrin or Teflon to make the piece, but then
I never throw anything away so I probably have some if I look long enough.
