One quick test is to disconnect the line and hold your finger over the end.  If the idle rpm picks up quite a bit, it was a retard.  If nothing happens, you can try connecting a source of vacuum to the module (eg from a MityVac or manifold vacuum).  If applying vacuum makes the idle rpm increase, then it is an advance module.  If you still get no reaction, it doesn't work :)

I'm reluctant to "recommend" it, since it is a violation of Federal law.  But mine (on the Stags) are disabled.

With the early Stag, I had trouble getting the idle rpm down without the retard, until I adjusted the linkage to the float bowl vent valve.  But I hear that isn't usually a problem with the TR6.
