VR1 is on sale at AutoZone for $6/qt.  O'Reillys also has a sale on it once or twice a year, but not just at the moment.  Or if you
can wait a few days, Amazon has it for $5.50/quart (and eligible for free shipping with Prime).

"Often recommended", yes.  Whether there is a real reason for it is a different question.

But, I do know that there is a whole lot more to motor oil than just how much ZDDP it has.  Looking only at ZDDP is kind of like
picking a computer based only on how fast the hard drive spins.
