Bad gas has a pretty distinctive smell to it.  I imagine that is not the problem.  I'll suggest
you remove the top covers of the carbs and take a spray can of carb ( or throttle body ) cleaner
with the plastic tube and direct a good blast down through the jet openings, and make sure there
is no varnish on the needles.

One can remove the float bowls with the carbs in place, kind of a pain but quicker than removing
the whole carb.  There may also be some varnish gumming up the inlet valves that a little spray
cleaner should be able to clean up.
