Obviously they should be checked whenever you mess with the head, but as I recall
the factory suggested they be checked at the 1,000 mile mark, then every 12,000 miles.
On those occasions when I work on one down at Bailey's checking at least a few is a
matter of course, more so if they seems noisy.
