Some engines seem to need more frequent adjustment, others almost never.
Valve recession may be one reason for this.
I check the gaps with every general tune-up -- usually twice a year before
long trips in the Spring and Fall. That's a convenient time as the plugs
are all out so the engine is easy to turn.
Once you get a good sense of it you can just rock the rockers and feel if
the gap is about right any time you have the valve cover off.
