TS500001 had the later style starter, flywheel, bell housing, and trans tunnel.  Also the trans fill plug was moved to the side and the dipstick deleted.  Swapping a later top cover onto an early gearbox creates the interesting situation of having to way to fill it <g>

And yes, the gear drive starter solves very neatly the problem of using a later flywheel with an early bellhousing.

FWIW, it also solves the problem of many tubular headers not fitting with the early starter.
