That sounds like you have the passenger side wired wrong, so the tail light
filament is coming on for the brakes.  The tail light filament is
deliberately much dimmer than the brake light.  To double check, just
connect the two base contacts together with the brake lights on.  If the
bulb gets substantially brighter, that is the problem.

Did you have a wrench on the bolt heads?

TRF supplies HB924 and HB928, which are 3/8" UNF, 3" and 3-1/2"
respectively.
