David, The pump should contain a check valve, such that it will not allow exhaust gases back into the intake even with the belt removed. Thus it should be OK to just remove the belt. But, it's possible that check valve is no longer effective, so you might want to keep an eye on it; or just go ahead and block it off. -- Randall
