I use Mitee thread cutting oil for drilling or tapping steel.  Seems like it
maybe works a bit better than WD40, but I couldn't prove it.  Supposedly the
sulfur content helps maintain lubrication under the extreme pressure near
the cutting edge.

But possibly it's no longer available; I couldn't find a source just now.
