Well, let's draw what I feel is an important distinction to this discussion.
Where lockwashers work well is in joints that do not have stresses near the
capability of the bolt/stud, but do need the spring/locking action that a
lockwasher can provide and are tight enough to compress the lockwasher.
Thus, they are horrible in high stress joints (eg connecting rod bolts,
cylinder head nuts, flywheel bolts, etc.) but work well in places like oil
pans and timing covers; but again not so good in places like Triumph rocker
covers (with very light torque).
And they do work, when properly applied. It's just that, like so many other
things, one size does not fit all.
