[TR] Aluminum Oil Pan

I just realized that the aluminum oil pan on my TR3A does not have the
splash plate (or whatever it is called).  

What is its purpose (Or how does it protect against splash)? And is it
absolutely necessary?  I have sourced one in Europe but before I spend
the $ (short supply right now) thought I would ask the collective wisdom
of the list....

Does anyone know of a source here in the states?
