Other than the valves, valve guides and spark plugs there aren't too many  
other sources of little balls of molten metal as seen in your pics.  When  
pistons fail from events like detonation or connecting rod failure, they usually  
deposit chunks of aluminum on the piston top.  These little pieces look  like 
they came from valves or guides.  Whether the cylinder is "wet" from  unburned 
fuel or coolant, I think you need to address the head and also check  the 
block deck for true flat across the deck....of course, check the cylinder  walls 
for scoring, etc.
