[Tigers] Tigers Digest, Vol 16, Issue 8

The headers Brian is talking about are a new batch made by CAT as a replica item.  One of the local members had an original set that was reverse engineered. The finish question is a good one given the inclusion of LAT options as written in our United judging guidelines. As I understand it representatives of Sunbeam clubs got together and agreed on guidelines.  I have seen a set and was on the interest list for a set for one of my cars. A local MK2 has an original set installed but I've never got down low enough to look.

Brian,
I would question whether your authentic LAT headers are really authentic.
The original LAT headers, as you can see in the brochure picture, connected
the stock exhaust system via a tight right-angle fitting into the
collectors.  For track use you would remove the block-off plate from the
end of the collector.  For street use the block off plate would stay on and
the exhaust would have to go around the tight right-angle bend.  That setup
was good for the track but really lousy for the street.  I suspect that
your "authentic" headers don't incorporate the right-angle feature and
therefore would fail any authenticity test with flying colors.  As to the
color and finish on the LAT headers, I had LAT headers on my car for some
time and it's my recollection that they were satin black.  The original
color doesn't matter much, though, because the paint burnt off in no time.

All,Thanks for all the great input regarding thermal coating and colors.
Another option I'm exploring is installing LAT 27 Tri-Y headers instead. They were originally painted black and silver to distinguish which side to install.Does anyone know how to distinguish them without the paint? How about the down pipes; does anyone have a source or a jig?
The recent articles in the CAT Tiger Tales and TEAE newsletters discussing Port of Entry has a British American Imports sticker for B9471362 that lists eight LAT additions that were installed by Import Autos, Inc. of Jackson, MI.
The Suggested Retail Price included only factory installed options and delivery/handling.?
The Adjusted Total included all options, including LAT.

If you don't allow (taking off points) LAT headers in concours, then all LAT options shouldn't be allowed, aluminum valve covers, oil pans, wheels, hood, etc. No Tiger came from England with any LAT options, they would all be dealer installed, which wouldn't be seen very often. Maybe "High Performance Motors?" etc. might have installed headers etc. before selling a car. Rootes had problems getting the LAT options for SCCA homologation. Anyone have a dealer invoice showing LAT options on it when sold?

None except the works race cars. ?Agree - headers shouldn?t be concours.? That said - I personally would enjoy a nice stock looking car with headers without worrying too much about concours points.? And on that topic - white ceramic coatings look awesome and are most effective.? Also period correct for race car headers.?
Happy new year Larry and all tiger members.? Let?s make 23 is better than 22 (please!)

If judging a car, then my first requirement would always be:? Did it leave the factory in England with the headers or other whatcha ma call it?? Otherwise it might be a dealer installed option but mostly I think headers were installed by the owners after homologation for SCCA racing or because they just helped the power output a smidge? Does anyone have stats on how many left the factory completion with headers as we are talking about?

Don't know about the LAT 73 headers, but "other" headers of the period were usually satin black/semi gloss black from the manufacturer.

Brian,

?

That is really a " refer to the judging guidelines" question.

?

1.? My personal opinion is while the coating is preferable as it protects from rust and can offer advantages of reduced engine bay temps and keeps heat in the exhaust ports..? It isnt stock... If you coat to appear original finish its up to the judges to spot...? If you have these coated and another car has them painted .. I'd pin you the point...??

2. The LAT brochure shows what appears to be a satin black finish on them.. But its a B/W brochure..? And..? Maybe they painted them for the sales images .... So take that for what its worth.. So if ceramic coating a satin black Would be the first choice...

Happy New Year everyone,

I'm purchasing a set of reproduction LAT 73 headers and want to have them thermal coated.

Two questions.

1. Will I get dinged at concours (stock class) for coating the headers?

2. If not, what color were the original LAT 73 headers?

?

I have to pony up the cash for the headers and coating soon, so timely feedback will be most appreciated.
