Hammer tone is one of those finicky paints like Wrinkle paint.
Paint them at different temperatures and you get different looking finishes.
Making paint stick is all in the paint prep work.

Yes, I would call the photos hammertone silver... like I remember mine in 1971.
It was also peeling off just like Allan's. My re-sprays back in the day looked pretty much
like that but also peeled like original in just a few years (or less).
I see concours TIgers with a MUCH more pronounced hammer from modern paint and they
just are not right.
Sears! I got my NOS exhaust system from Sears in 1975, still on my car!
So that air cleaner is from 1977. Seems like an improved one piece version of the original
three piece filter.
I happen to know where there is a small stash of I think identical
filters, brand new. WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK THOSE ARE WORTH?

Yes, it is close. A very nice example of a 1977 replacement air filter.
The stock original air cleaner has 5 parts according to the Parts List
1224830 Air Cleaner
Bottom plate
Top plate
5042656 element sealing gaskets (2)
5042655 element
The last time I saw an original element it folded lengthwise and in a long thin Rootes box.

Friends: As I was photographing my original Air Cleaner to discuss color, I found my element.
It is still pliable and not torn up.
There is a formed logo in the black rubber. (see photo)
Interestingly, it is from Sears and cost $10.36 a long time ago.
Does this look like it would be close to original?
For your entertainment.

It's grey hammertone. I cropped Alan's first picture to show an area with correct color and texture. Find attached.

Alan: Yours looks very much like mine, but your paint is in better condition than mine.
I also shot my photos in natural, non-glaring lighting conditions.
(I shared three photos in an earlier Email today.)
The more I look at my Air Cleaner in outside, cloudy light, and then at your photos, the more I could be easily convinced it is Hammertone.

Here a few pictures of the bottom piece of one of my air cleaner housings.
This housing came off a Mk1 Tiger and went on a shelf exposed to the elements where
It sat for years - until I bought it at a “yard sale” for 60 bucks, along with other Tiger parts.
I believe the paint is original - what’s left of it.
The paint appears to be alligatoring and falling off.
The pictures were taken with a DSLR camera using natural light from a window to the right.
There is no “hue” from an incandescent or florescent bulb, or any light bulb..
Perhaps someone can tell if the finish was hammertone.
The color must be the factory color as toned by the years and weather.

Interestingly, my air cleaner housing which is in rough shape but appears to have original paint still on it definitely is NOT Hammerstein type of paint. It is a slightly blueish grey closer to the convertible top frame but slightly bluer

Hi all, happy new year.
Does anyone have a paint code for the grey on the air cleaner housing?
Thanks!
