Joel, 1) listen to the experts, and the shop manual re valve lash,

2) unless there's stuff in the way you can unbolt the transmission
crossmember and drop the transmission tail down with a floor jack enough to
remove the valve covers.  That should give you clearance to remove the
valve covers if they're anything close to stock.
