David, if they got the factory rootes luggage rack they didnt actually
drill the boot(trunk) lid. It had 4 rubber pads and a series of metal
tethers that wrappen around the edge of the lid to hold it on. The rubber
cups could leave a mark, but if he took it off after his european trip (
which seems likely given its limited use as a daily car for the next 30
years ) could probably buff any marks out.

When the car was sold recently it still had the original top on: ( lots of
great detail photos)
