I am not sure what ford had in mind for the small block 260 as a best operating temp but I suspect it was maybe more than boiling temps.

Everything I have read about Ford engine block temp stated at 180 F the internal wear is minimal.
The other problem is that above 220 F the oil will start to deteriorate. The higher the temp above 220 the faster the fluids deteriorate.
At a track event I noticed one car came of the track early. The driver complained that the brakes and steering felt wrong.
I looked in the engine bay an notice his power steering cooler was behind the supercharger air exchanger. His hydrostatic brakes and power steering fluid was probably seeing 300 F. A very good thing he came off the track when he did. The power steering fluid in that car probably deteriorated in less than 5 minutes at that temp.
