Allan, I did the same on my car. Pretty much a "no brainer", if you're already going to be building a new system, anyways.

I had an H pipe installed when the exhaust system was built for my Mk1a Tiger. It's no beast but has been warmed up.
I vaguely recall the optimum position was ~21 inches back.
Better sound was a plus but I wanted to increase torque, even the little bit associated with a H pipe.

Joke's on me!!!! I just looked to see where my H pipe is. And there isn't one!!! I guess I was remembering his comments from another car that we built together, which does have an H pipe and I was working on it just last weekend.
So I guess the sound I like so much on my Tiger is the stock configuration.

"H" pipes work better when closer to the engine.
"H" pipes also make a deeper tone than an "X" pipe.

Here's 2 pictures of H pipe we made for my '64 Tiger. Decided to put it back of seats to reduce interior heat and there's more room there as well. Pipe is 2 1/4" and exhaust was made from parts of a universal kit. Cliff

FWIW, we were at one of the Laguna Seca Historics/Reunions. This is a race with all sorts of exotic classics, of course, including Ferraris, Porsches, etc., all known for their exhaust sound. I had to admit that my favorite two cars running were two Mustangs - very distinct, smooth, yet screaming/ripping sound - almost Ferrari like! But, better in this case. The other Mustangs were nowhere near as smooth or ripping - "just" your garden variety booming race V8s. We later found the cars in the paddock. Both were side by side in the Edlebrock tent. We spoke to Vic himself. He said both of them had X pipes that they developed. He said that he did not believe their X pipe (or anything close) would fit in a Tiger. But he added that the X pipe is more for higher racing rpms, while the H pipe probably sounds better for street rpm ranges.
