[Tigers] Problems with my 1997 Ranger SPlash 3.0L powered Pickup.

Does the engine have an oil to water cooler? My nephew had an MR-2 that did, sprung a leak somewhere in the cooler. Still it seems baffling that it only appears “pooled in the upper hose.” How does it pool if it is circulating? Nothing in the radiator or elsewhere? It seems odd that it would remain in the hose after draining. A lot of thermostats have a tiny hole to assist in removing air when re-filling coolant. That is assuming the thermostat is where it was pooling.

Might want to check forums relating to the specific vehicle because if this is common they will have “been there, done that.” You might want to check over at “The Ranger Station” http://www.therangerstation.com/ . They have good resources even to the extent that their info has been helpful with my Turbo Pinto as the Pinto/Turbo Coupe/Ranger all share the same 2.3 Lima engine. You have a V6 but I’d think they cover that too.

Ok, so my radiator split a side tank and was dripping water. Purchased a new rad and water pump. Truck even though it is a ’97 has only 84K miles on it. Started rad R&R by draining the coolant, Hmmm kinda dark but still recognizable as antifreeze. Pulled the upper hose off and yee haaa! Liquid oil there! Had pooled inside the hose. So I am fretting over pulling the heads but now I am curious to say the least. Checked the dipstick and no water there no milkshake oily stuff, just oil. So far have pulled drivers side plugs as they are the easiest to get to , and all look perfect for age and run time. So, the big question from me, is where the heck does oil actually get into the coolant system ? Since it is pressurized system oil has to be pressurized to get into it? Or does it get drawn in somewhere when coolant cools down and sucks it in? Does coolant leak into a cylinder and get back to rad from combustion chamber? Not much oil there.

So somebody or all of ya educate me. All new ground for me.
