    I would check the wheel lug holes for cracks - if none I would use it.

Lug nut torque is 48 ft lbs.  I think most of us have had problems because
of over torque on the lug nuts.

The last time I replaced the tires on my Tiger I told the service guy the
torque was 48 which surprised him; otherwise I'm sure he would have used his
air gun to smash the lug nuts on.

Ok, now my head is starting to hurt.  Great information but having a time
deciding on using the wheel I have or getting another.

I have a 1966 Mk 1A Tiger.  The wheel I have has the '63' year code on it.
Appears the early Alpine wheels were updated with another road wheel with
reinforced holes - Thanks Rande Bellman for this information.  So Tiger's
had the reinforced holes with the updated reinforced holes.  Strike 2 on my
63 wheel, wrong date and non reinforced holes, while just to be used as a
spare, different 15" wheels planned for on the ground, maybe should not
matter.  Anyone like to trade a '63' wheel for a 66 wheel?

Colors:  paint the entire wheel 'semi-gloss black'
Outisde:  Foam white has been discussed for the wheel color but I do not
know for sure if that is correct.

Rootes code 8 Foam White - Berger code 404.1137    ICI 3255
The DuPont Historical Color Library for Rootes Motors Inc - Lists Foam White
(grey) and a Foam White
Foam White (grey) - IC 562
Foam White            IC 96

Thanks Ron for the above color information  - I have not contacted paint
store to see if they could create a couple of rattle cans if they can find
the IC 562 or  Rootes code 8 Foam White - Berger code 404.1137    ICI 3255
paint code.

I determine the 5.90 x 13 and 6.00 x 13 to translate to a 165 x 80 x13 tire
size and would like to find a modern radial - no luck yet.

Thanks to Dale A for recommending MileStar Touring SE tires as a pretty much
dead ringer for the original tires.

Their MS775 has the white wall but they carry 2 sizes:

P155/80/R13 with a outside diameter of 22.8.
P175/80/R13 with a outside diameter of 24.0

Calculated available space in the trunk for spare wheel and tire is about
24", so the P175 would probably rub all around but do not know for sure.
Any thoughts or experience.

The 165/80/13 would probably be the best if you can find them.  Thoughts on
all of the above?

Fort Bragg has been firing their big guns since before sun up and the
windows are rattling every minute - think I will go get the trucks oil
changed, have some local brewed beer with a cup of bison chili, while I wait
as it has been raining here for about 8 straight days here in NC.

Oh, the hard top is ready today to pick up after PPG gloss black paint
applied.  I had the top soda blasted, then got the rest of the rust
sandblasted in all the corners by yours truly then onto the paint shop.  If
I could just get the wheels and door chroming finishing strip back with
seats coming next week, time for a road test.  5-6 years in the making -
starting to get excited.  Now on to the micro brew and chili.

Lived in Santa Monica / Palisades / Malibu for 35 years. Surfed in Oxnard /
Ventura a lot and for 2-3 years my girlfriend (now wife) lived in Goleta. We
both know that rock very well and can spot that stretch of PCH in
milliseconds!

There is a theory the alpine and tiger wheels are different, there I think
was a change in wheel design by rootes where they added the strengthening
rib next to each lug hole, this may have been started due to tigers, but
became common to alpine and even other rootes cars.

light Grey" color... as the "over-spray" is clearly visible on the backside
of this spare. Also: this tire has a wheel weight stamped with the Dunlop
logo. This may support the idea that it is original?

It may not be correct to assume that the same approach was used on the MKIA
Tigers.  But, seems likely (although the wheel might be a bit different?).

I'm at work right now and do not have access to my copy of TBON, but I seem
to recall that the MkIIs had stock steel wheels that were painted a silver
color on both sides, while the Mk1 and Mk1A wheels were painted black on the
inside of the wheel and white on the outside.  If I'm not mistaken, I
believe the correct color ID for the outside wheel color was "Seafoam Gray,"
or something like that.  I contacted Tower Paint in Appleton, WI, years ago
and gave them the afore-mentioned name of the correct Rootes color and they
were able to mix me several cans of it to spray my wheels with.  

Jay was correct in his description of the spray method.  The wheels were
evidently painted black and then the "Seafoam Gray" was applied to the
outside surface of the wheel with no effort by the factory to mask off the
inside surface.  It is proper to have a little overspray come through and
land on the black surface of the inside of the wheel, so don't worry about
that.

Joel,
Here (hopefully you can see them) are pictures of my original spare
from my MKI B9470622..  (black, grey-white front, Dunlop RS5).
Note the /64 datecode.  Your picture looks like /63 datecode, not
sure if that could have been left over long enough for your MKIa but
maybe...
You also have the early MKI "crosshatch" trim ring, pretty sure you
should have the later style.

To build on what was just posted to this group, there was a problem with
metal around the lug stud holes, and a new wheel with reinforced holes was
substituted for the Tiger, dated Jan 1965(according to a parts catalogue
change) and the very same wheel  replaced all Series 3, Series IV, and
Series V Alpines when the Alpine portion of the catalogue(3rd revision) was
published circa Feb 1965. According to the parts catalogue, it also replaces
wheels on Alpine Series II after car serial # B9107290.

The updated road wheel is part number 1214930. Two of the wheels that came
with my Tiger are stamped with the updated number. Using the valve stem hole
as the 12 OClock position, this stamping is at the 6 OClock postion and an
additional number (65 on one wheel of my car and 66 on the other) is at the
9 OClock position. If your road wheels were in the same condition as mine,
you may have to take a wire brush to the wheels to remove layers of paint to
see the number.
