Ron,
Would like to see the bracket that you're using. I made one up from
aluminum and it has worked fine for 4 yrs. but would like to change it to
something that I have total confidence in. I know I can bite the bullet and get a
great one for about $200, but if there is a cheaper way.................

Glad you got to the Root of your charging problem.
I use to have mostly problems with my VR. I had to run with the cover off
and every now and again I would have to clear the points in the VR to get
voltage.
I installed a volt meter under the dash so I could keep better track of
what was going on with the charging system.
Coming home from the TE/AE United in 1998, the generator gave up. Mostly
the brushes were worn and I had to use a hammer on the generator about
every 50 miles to keep the charge going. The generator needed complete rebuild
by the time I got home.
That is when I really started thinking about converting to an alternator
system. It took several years for me to organize the parts and come up
with an install plan but I did come up with a fairly easy install plan; in
case your interested.

Subject: [Tigers] Electrical Issue Solved
Hi Listers
If you recall I was experiencing some problems with my charging system. My
first guess was a problem with the Voltage regulator since I have had
problems in the past. I switched out a couple different regulators, but that
did not correct the problem. I then turned to the generator and had it bench
tested...it bench-tested OK. So then I turned to the
wiring/grounds/connections. After a lot of fiddling still no charging. So I went back to the
generator and had it rebuilt despite the positive bench test. That did it. The
ignition warning lamp is off and I am getting a solid 14.5v @ 1500 rpm at
the battery.
Thanks to all who contributed input. It is always a big help.
Jim
