I think we're almost asking the right question.  Does anyone know if the restriction or power loss from the stock air cleaner setup due to the filter element, or due to the proximity of the housing top to the carb throat?  Could the alleged gains from using a taller filter in the same housing be more due to the corresponding increased clearance to the carb throat, than to increased filter area?

Inquiring minds want to know...
