Jay,
In your search for the problem with the clutch there is a source where your 
 father spoke often of what he was doing with that Tiger. In the web 
Archives I  punched in "clutch Laifman" and got 179 hits.  Just read a few, but in 
some  your father talks about replacing the clutch hydraulics in 1997.  
Maybe in  reading though the 179 posts you can discover what you've inherited.
