>>>I have a jar of pilot-bearing-removal paste that I've created for the
>>>sole purpose of removing pilot bearings... <<<

I just want to confirm that this process works. When I first heard about it
I was VERY skeptical. I have one of the last Studebakers with the Chevy
engine. They used a pilot bearing to center the torque converter in the
crank. Keeping this rather rare piece was necessary because of an engine
change. I tried every sort of heat / oil / slide hammer / puller I could
contrive to no avail.

In desperation I packed the opening with grease, found a snug fitting
wooden dowel and hammered it in. Expecting nothing (or just grease oozing
out) I was shocked to see the first hit push the bearing out about half way.
The next hit removed it. I had wrapped a rag around the dowel, but it
seemed unnecessary as the second hit was ... just enough.

Theo's idea was creative but having to explain to my wife every six months
why I don't throw out that "junk" in the jar..... . :-)

PS I don't think this will work on roller pilot bearings.
