Here are the cardboard panels on my unrestored '59.  You can also see the reddish brown primer that was used inside the boot.

At the front face of the suspension cross-member was in black Terry Horler's book "Original Sprites and Midgets" (mine is 1994 edition page 47) states those black parts were "flashed over in black", which I interpret as a light coat with no masking off and just enough to cover the body color.
