I find a Power Probe invaluable in tracing these kinds of problems 
because it has a buzzer.  The cheaper one makes a steady buzz for 
continuity and a warbling buzz for voltage >6v.  So you can poke around 
and just listen to the buzz.  The more expensive one will also tell you 
amount of voltage, not just presence, but I have not tried one.  They 
have a lot more wires and complication.
