The axles (drive shafts/half shafts) transmit the drive and there is no
drive. The wheels are freely rotating on the hubs and the hubs are mounted
on the axle casing.

Yes, you need the 'pumpkin (whatever that is eventually defined as) to
hold the axles in, but NO, you don't need the axles so consequently you don't
need the pumpkin.
