[Spridgets] Cut-out and fried generator

The the voltage cut-out mechanism makes no sense to me:  The points close when the electromagnet gets strong enough.  I would assume the opposite: that a strong electromagnet would open the points and cut the circuit, which is how the regulator works.  

Are the cut-out points a bypass circuit?  I am trying to trace the path of electricity through the guts of the box, but it does not make sense yet.
