It's not enough water to quench the flame during ignition, but it prevents
the air/fuel from pre-detonating.

So it is like raising the octane rating of the gas.

 

Some of the extra power comes from the state change as the water transitions
from liquid to steam.

 

Interestingly, many modern cars have "sort of" a water injection system
already.

 

It's called EGR (exhaust gas recirculation). 

The products of combustion in a gasoline engine are water and CO2.

EGR takes some of the exhaust and recirculates back it into the intake.

This adds some moisture back into the intake charge.  This lowers the peak 

combustion temperature and, in doing so, reduces the formation of nitrous
oxide compounds (smog).

Dean, I don't understand the water injection of the farm tractors and WWII
planes why don't they stop because of the water? Is it because of the mist
not flow?
