I may be off base here and hate to be the bearer of bad news, but...

I'm betting that if you check you're going to find that the Z has bad timing
belt.  My kid had that same car that "just stopped running".  When I came to
bail him out a little checking revealed the bad timing belt.  That engine is
an interference type and most likely will be looking at a full rebuild in
its future.

I would have emailed you before he purchased it, but Susan has been (is) in
the hospital with breathing problems (pneumonia and/or a blood clot near her
lung) so I haven't been following along for the past couple days.

Good luck with the Z and I hope it isn't the timing belt.

He bought it! The engine stopped running and the pwners' son couldn't figure
out why. The Uncle (owner) had moved to Kalifornia (1978 280Z -- smog
issues?)
The Niece (a nurse) didn't want it, so they sold it!
Body excellent - no rust or major dinghs, Mechanicals in good Condition ...
interior needs some TLC.

I asked him "Did wifey agree?"
He said "No! But she grudgingly acquiesced" 
She gets a new dining room table !

And a stroke of luck... I still have my CD of the workshop manuals for a
1978 280Z in searchable pdf format..,. Serendipity <g>
