Steve, if you are replacing the cam, you really should replace the tappets 
at the same time and, of course, you will need to pull the tappets and 
pushrods out to pull the cam out.

I was
being cheap at the time so kept the original cam.

Am I correct that to replace the cam all I need to do is remove the front
cover and oil pan?
