[Spridgets] compressor thoughts

Not being familiar with the I-R unit, I will venture a guess that the Quincy
runs at about the same speed. Compressors tend to be noisy, even the old,
low-speed ones. In my career in the river transportation industry, I've
worked around compressors of every description. While I'm often tempted to
"adopt" an old compressor, from a scrapped towboat, I have (so far) ruled it
out due to the cost & availability of replacement parts for 50 to 70 year
old compressors.
But, they're ALL going to be noisier than you could stand to be in the same
room with.
Perhaps you remember the old gas station units being so quiet is because
they often had such huge storage tanks that they seldom kicked on.
I recently moved my Quincy into my "new" building (10 years old), to
eliminate the need to pipe air over the 50' between my two garage buildings.
It is now sitting on a "table" with the base about 3'6" above floor level,
and is in a room separate from my workshop. Yeah, I can still hear it run,
but it is barely noticeable from my workshop.
You could house your compressor in a small "outhouse" attached to your
garage, which you could insulate for sound deadening. You need to be sure
to allow for an adequate flow of cooling air, and rig up something so that
the compressor draws it's air from outside.
