Ok this may get a few chuckles. I was testing the Bugeye again today
after a front end alignment.
I had only 2 miles or so on the car from short test driving before
today. I drove it half a mile from the house and the steering is a
little better than before, so I start on a longer loop from the house.
About a mile away from home. I decide to turn around because the
township oiled and chipped the crossroad. Clang, clang... what the
heck is that. I shut it down and look underneath. The driveshaft is
separated from the rear. Now I checked and rechecked those nuts for
tightness.
I figure Jane can tow me a mile home, there are too many hills to push
it up.
Of course the weather here today was severe clear. Accuweather is
showing 0% chance of rain. While I'm waiting for jane to arrive the
sky turns grey and it starts to rain. I don't even have the top with
me.
I felt like I was in some bad luck movie. I was waiting for the
locusts and floods.
Anyway the dumbass mechanic (that's me) obviously did not tighten the
diff pinion nut enough so the flange, dust cover and the whole works
pulls out still attached to the driveshaft.
I just inspected it and the splines oil seal and all seem to be
undamaged so I am putting it back together. How tight does the pinion
nut need to be? I don't see a torque value anywhere for it.
So if you car work today isn't going as well as you hoped, just
remember, it could be worse.
