[Spridgets] Question on Original Design of Underside

Undeneath a Sprite, at least a Frog Aye, I notice these little scoop like
pieces that are welded to the bottom.

They look like they could be used to slide something into them.  I guess the
best way to "splain" them is that they look like miniature hood scoops on
the bottom of the car, about an inch or so in length.

Does anyone know why the motor company went through the trouble to weld
these little scoops in place?
