Thrust washer problem happens at leat 50% of the time even with Vandervells (NLA) or Clevites (still available), but it is apparent without tightening rod caps. Frank's issue happened after snugging up the rods. FYI, when I tighten rod caps (and I do the rod bearings in White Trash at least once a year), I always mic the bearings (or in a pinch plastigauge) AND when tightening I put a feeler gauge between the edge of the rod cap and the edge of the crank ear/counterweight so that the cap doesn't cock at all during torquing. Probably overkill and superstition, but good practice.
