Is the shifter supposed to be different between a 1098 gearbox and a '70s
1275 box?

 

When I put my shifter from my 1098 trans in the 1275 trans there was lots of
play in the shift linkage.

 

I had a 2-pc shifter that fits a lot better, but the retaining plate won't
fit over the large center section of the 2-pc shifter to see how well it
really works.

 

Ideas?
