I grew up in a very nice suburb of NYC, on the border of Dix Hills and
Commack. Left in 1988 after college. We were the only house on the block that
didn't get robbed, and we also had fluffy dogs and no guns.

We live in a suburb of New York City.  I have no gun.  Our dog is a fluff
ball.  And we never lock the doors unless we are going to be gone for more
than 3 days.  In 30 years in the same house, we have been robbed once, very
early on when the locals thought we were rich Manhattanites.  When they
figured out we, too, were local, we never again had to worry.  Perhaps you
should reconsider the representativeness of your location?
