Ah but the wheel studs are actually on the inner hub which is secured with
the bearing to the axle casing with the hub nut.
The half shaft itself has holes that slide over the wheel studs so tying the
whole thing together. When the wheel is in place the lug nuts (along with
the screws and drum) hold the half shaft and inner hub together.

If you pull the half shaft out it will be clear to see the hub nut
underneath it and it will make perfect sense then.
