So it sounds as if the travel of the piston is in  the right range. That 
would leave slop in the pivot, bent arm, wrong arm  for the application, 
bad/worn throwout, defective cover, and other worn  parts as logical 
suspects.

Pressure plate - clutch disc and TO bearing are all new - didn't seem to be  
any slop in the pivot - this is the same transmission that was working just 
fine  with 1098 clutch setup - do you need to change pivot arm for change to 
1275  clutch?  Would it be worth it to try and take almost all the free play out  
at the master?  TIA.
