[Shop-talk] adjustable thread dies

Just had another thought. Depending on how long the stud is, it may be simpler to cut off the damaged end with a dremel and an abrasive wheel. A rule of thumb I’ve used for years (not sure where I got it from - maybe one of my undergrad profs?) is that you want at least one diameter of the fastener above the nut, once it’s fully assembled.
