John,

Could be the thermocouple. How old is the unit. I have a set of gas
logs that has
the same sort of set up. But when I turn them on for the 1st
time, I have to really
heat up the thermocouple with a lighter for quite a while, other wise
the pilot lite
goes out. I think it's just that the thermocouple is cold and
doesn't heat up quickly.
consiquently turning off the pilot light when you release the "start" button.

I'd say try holding the "start" button on for at least a minute or
try using a lighter
to heat it up for at least a minute or two and see if that works.

John
