Jim, I hate to say it, but YES!!!
in fact, my neighbor bought an IOT enable stove. I showed him that I
could turn it on and off from my house.
There is a saying in the cyber security world, "The "S" in "IOT" stands
for security!"
These home camera systems, door bells, baby monitors, refrigerators, TVs,
and of course, Siri/Alexa are constantly gathering data from you.
Think about the topics you talk about in your kitchen. Many of these
devices have at LEAST a mic, and now many have cameras as well.
This is not 'conspiracy nonsense' look up the reports about it.

Eric, moving more off topic, do smart products, like an air conditioner I
can control from my iPhone, or web based security cameras, present the
same security hole?,

In a nutshell....
BRING IT BACK!!!
A printer company does NOT need to require internet for printing. It's
clearly amassing data/metrics about you and your computing habits (and can
be remotely 'disabled' at any time.)
Consumers need to stand up to companies and say "NO MORE" Only support
products that we can buy and OWN without their permissions. Plus, it is a
MASSIVE security hole. In this world of cyber attacks, you'll never find
a device like that in my house.

Sorry for the off topic but I know there are many computer experts out
there.
I bought this printer so I would have a "simple" B&W laser jet for
shipping labels.
When I bought it I missed that is has to stay connected to the web even
after set up and subsequent printing through the USB cable.
I am hoping I can install the drivers for this thing without the need for
constant web access by the machine.
Any one have any thoughts on how I can do this? (near as I can tell, the
HP web site won't allow just downloading the drivers. It want access to my
network on the very first step.)
thanks
